This is a manual fix for XP users:

1. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\1
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

2. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\2
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

3. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\3
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

4. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\4
and paste it to this folder:

In Vista and Windows 7 the path is different but need to go this folder location and paste it.

The success of this particular Registry Tweak depends mostly on your current Internet connection.

Click Start - Run.
Type "regedit" and click OK.
In the left pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
In the right pane you should see the contents of Internet Settings.
Check Regedit's right-hand column for the following two lines (values): MaxConnectionsPerServer MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
If these values are present, right-click on the first value (MaxConnectionsPerServer), select Modify from the drop-down menu, click Decimal, and set the Value data field to 6. Repeat this process for the second value (MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server).
If these lines (values) are not listed, right-click on the white region of Regedit's right-hand column, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
Enter MaxConnectionsPerServer for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column.
Right-click the new value and click Modify.
As in step six, click Decimal and set the Value Data field to 6, then click OK.
Repeat steps seven through 10 using MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server as the new DWORD Value name instead of MaxConnectionsPerServer.
Close Regedit, restart the computer or log off and test Internet Explorer.

How to Make Windows XP Startup Faster

1. Click on Start, then Run, and type "msconfig". Wait for a new window to pop up.

2. Look under the "BOOT.INI" tab. You will see a box labeled "Timeout:", and a numerical value. By default, it's 30, which means 30 seconds of wait time before boot. This can be changed, make it 3 seconds. (Note: if you have more than one operating system, this means the wait time to startup to the highlighted Operating System. Sometimes you might want a bit more than 3 seconds than you can opt 5 or 10 seconds)

3. Delete The Temporary Files Periodically From Your Computer To Make The Applications Run Faster. Type %Temp% in the run dialog box by clicking on Start -> Run, and click on "OK". You will see an open folder with many files. Click on the Edit menu and click on Select all and then click on the File menu and select Delete. Note: Always confirm that the folder which is opened has a "temp" on the top of menu bar and the folder indicates that it is a temporary folder.

4. Perform a Scandisk To See That Your Computer Hard Drive is in Healthy Condition and it helps Your Computer Run Faster.

5. Always Perform a Disk Defragmentation at least once in a month. Start the disk defragmentation from the system tools available in the accessories from the start menu. It takes a longer time and it is advised not to run any applications in the computer including the screen savers, while running disk defragmentation.

6. Clean Windows Registry Regularly. For that use the good registry cleaup tool.

7. Simply browse to the windows folder (Ex: C:\Windows) and under there you would see the prefetch folder. Go into the prefetch folder and delete all the files (Beware! It should look like this c:\windows\prefetch). We need to edit a registry key to tweak it. Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Under this key you should see a value named: EnablePrefetcher

It has 4 possible values:
0 - Disabled : The prefetch system is turned off.
1 - Application : The prefetch only caches applications.
2 - Boot : The prefetch only caches boot system files.
3 - All : The prefetch caches boot, and application files.

You need not to disable it entirely. This would actually make boot times *longer*. This is because this feature is also used to speed up the loading of boot files. That is why you should pick the number 2 option. It allows you to keep the advantage of caching system files, without continually clogging the system up with applications.

Set the value to 2 and reboot.

6. For Two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the same Number -
NOTE: This is if you have two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the exact same numbers, but the second (below) one has the .bak at the end of the numbers.

A) In the left pane, right click on the first (top) S-1-5..... folder (SID key) that does not have .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.

B) Add .bk to the end of the numbers.

C) In the left pane, right click on the second S-1-5..... folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.
D) Remove only .bak from the end of the numbers and press Enter.

E) Now go back and Rename the first one with .bk to .bak now at the end of the numbers and press Enter.

F) Go to step 8.

7. For Only One S-1-5..... Folder (SID key) with .bak -
NOTE: This is if you only have one S-1-5..... folder (SID key) for your user account with .bak at the end of the numbers.

A) In the left pane, right click on the S-1-5..... folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.

B) Remove only .bak at the end of the numbers and press Enter.

8. In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on RefCount and click on Modify. (See screenshot below step 10)
NOTE: If you do not have RefCount, then right click on a empty space in the right pane and click New and DWORD (32 bit) Value, then type RefCount and press Enter. This value for this entry will reset and return back to the original value after you have restarted the computer and logged on to the account.

A) Type 0 (number) and click on OK.

9. In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on State and click on Modify. (See screenshot below step 10)
NOTE: This value for this entry will reset and return back to the original value after you have restarted the computer and logged on to the account.

Unable to delete emails from Outlook Express

If you cannot delete email in Outlook Express and the program crashes frequently the problem might be because of corrupt storage folders - typically, the Inbox and the Deleted Items. As you may know, the email program uses the Inbox to store all incoming email, Sent Items for the messages you have sent and Delete Items for the messages that have been discarded. Now if you cannot delete an email in Outlook Express the cause of your troubles might be faultly or corrupt Inbox or Delete Items folders.
Fixing these two folders is not difficult and for that we need to find out where these folders reside on the hard disk. In the Outlook Express program, go to "Tools" -> "Options" and move to the "Maintenance" tab. You'll find a "Store Folder..." button; click on it. This brings up a small window with the path to the storage folders directory. Use the left mouse button and click to select the entire path. Now right-click and choose the "Copy" option. Close the Outlook Express program.
Open the "Run" program from the "Start" menu and paste the full path (CONTROL-V or right-click -> Paste). The Outlook Express storage folders are hidden files. You may need to force Windows to show them. From the top menu, select "Tools" -> "Folder Options" and then from the "View" tab, check "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Now simply select the Deleted Items.dbx file and send it to the recycle bin. Don't worry; Outlook Express will create a new one when you start it again.
If you still cannot delete the email after manually removing the Deleted Items.dbx file, I suggest you do the same for the inbox storage folder. However, deleting that will also remove all of your store email messages. So first select and drag all the messages in a temporary folder (create on the Desktop); you can then drag them back to the inbox when you open Outlook Express again and it creates the inbox afresh.

2. Backup your current registry. To do this, click on File > Export and enter a name.
3. After you have backed up your registry, drill down as follows:HKey Local Machine > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Explorer > Volume Caches > Compress Old Files
4. In the right hand pane, double click on the REG_SZ (default) variable to edit it

Cause: This error may occur due to messed computer path.
To resolve the problem:
1. Open a Command Prompt and type: Set .
2. You should see included: Path C:\WINDOWS\system32.
3. To correct the path, on your system go to Start>right-click My Computer>click Properties.

5. Click the Environment Variables button, and select the Path variable listed under System Variables.
6. When editing it should include: %SystemRoot%\system32.
7. Which translates to something like: C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Problems in Viewing Secure Websites

Check your date and time settings
If this is the case, the first thing you want to check is the time and date settings on your computer to make sure they are correct.

Follow the steps below to check this:
1) Double click on the time in the bottom right hand corner of the screen in the System Tray.

2) Correct any errors in the date and time and click OK to set it.

3) Try the secure website that you were previously having trouble accessing
If you are still having trouble accessing it, proceed on to the next section.

Check your settings for your Antivirus and Firewall
Many times a problem with your antivirus or firewall can cause this issue. If you are using Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall, follow these steps to reset your privacy controls.
1) Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
2) In the right pane, click Privacy Control.

3) Click Configure.

4) Click Default Level.

5) Click OK.

6) Restart your computer and try to access the secured site again.

If this doesnt fix it, temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall and try the site again. If you can access the site after temporarily disabling your antivirus or firewall, then you'll want to repair or reinstall your firewall or antivirus to fix this.

If, however, this doesnt fix the problem, proceed to the next section.
Check your browser's Cipher Strength
1) In Internet Explorer, click on Help, About

How to ping email server with port number.

Ping will tell you if you can connect to the server, but doesn't tell you anything about Port 25. The 'ping' command generates an ICMP echo request packet. ICMP is a protocol over IP that implements "control messages" (flow control, routing, etc.). At that level the very concept of TCP/UDP ports is completely irrelevant.
Start off with "PING \\MyServerName" or "Ping 10.10.10.1" or whatever if you know the IP Address of the mail server.That will tell you whether you can see the Server or not.If you get a valid response to the Ping, try telnetting into the Server with "TELNET \\MyServerName 25" or "TELNET \\10.10.10.1" or whatever. You will either get a welcome message form the SMTP Server or see a "Connecting...." message which will time out. If you get a valid response from the SMTP Server, just type QUIT and hit enter to get out again (note you will probably not see your keystrokes echoed to your screen, so make sure you type it corrrectly)

In your registry you will have a registry key called: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
Now for some reason your installation might have a value in this key called:WOW64 and it probably has value 0x00000001 (1)
Now THAT's the whole problem right there. This value tells Windows Installer only to deal with 32-bit installers and to return you an error whenever you try to install something that is 64-bit. To fix it, just set the value to 0. So you will see in your editor:
WOW64 REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

How to start computer in SAFE MODE

Introduction
Windows Safe Mode is a way of booting up your Windows operating system in order to run administrative and diagnostic tasks on your installation. When you boot into Safe Mode the operating system only loads the bare minimum of Software that is required for the operating system to work. This mode of operating is designed to let you troubleshoot and run diagnostics on your computer. Windows Safe Mode loads a basic video drivers so your programs may look different than normal.

For Win98/ME, XP, Vista and Windows 7 there are two methods of booting into Safe Mode, while 95 and 2000 only have one. We will describe these methods below:

F8 - By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer beep when you reboot it, you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode. If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again as you have to be quick when you press it. I have found that during boot up right after the computer shows you all the equipment , memory, etc installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key you will usually be able to get to the desired menu.

System Configuration Utility - You can use the System Configuration Utility found in Windows 98, ME, XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 to make Windows boot into Safe Mode on the next reboot. We will go into specific details in the sections below.

Windows 95

Windows 95 can only boot into Safe Mode using the F8 method as it does not have a System Configuration Utility.

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. When it is finished with that it will say "Starting Windows 95". Immediately after seeing "Starting Windows 95" press the F8 key.
You will now be presented with a menu. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

Windows 98/ME

NOTE: Windows ME may look slightly different than what is shown in the images below. You should still have no problem following along.

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu.
When you have the menu on the screen. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

Using the System Configuration Tool Method:

Step 1: Close all programs so that you have nothing open and are at the desktop.

Step 2: Click on the Start button then click on Run.

Step 3: In the Run field type msconfig as shown in the image below.

Step 4: Press the OK button and the System Configuration Utility will start up. You will then see a screen similar to Figure 2 below.

Step 5: You should now press the Advanced button designated by the red box in the figure above and you will see a screen similar to figure 3 below.

Step 6: Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Enable Startup Menu" designated by the red box in Figure 3 above. Then press the OK button and then the OK button again. Windows 98/ME will now prompt if you would like to reboot as shown in Figure 4 below.

Step 7: Press the Yes button and your computer will restart into Safe Mode.

Step 8: When the computer boots up perform what diagnostic or troubleshooting tasks you require.

Step 9. When you are finished with these tasks, complete steps 1-7 again, but in Step 6 this time uncheck the checkbox labeled "Enable Startup Menu".

Step 10: Reboot the computer back into normal mode.

Windows 2000

Windows 2000 can only boot into Safe Mode using the F8 method as it does not have a System Configuration Utility.

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. When that is completed it will start loading Windows.
When you see the screen that has a black and white bar at the bottom stating "Starting Windows", tap the F8 key repeatedly until you get to the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu
At this menu use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode option, which is usually the first in the list.
Press the enter key.
Your computer will continue booting, but now will boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

Windows XP

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

Using the System Configuration Tool Method:

Step 1: Close all programs so that you have nothing open and are at the desktop.

Step 2: Click on the Start button then click on Run.

Step 3: In the Run field type msconfig as shown in the image below.

Step 5: Click on the tab labeled "BOOT.INI" which is designated by the red box in Figure 5 above. You will then be presented with a screen similar to Figure 6 below.

Step 6: Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "/SAFEBOOT" designated by the red box in Figure 6 above. Then press the OK button. After pressing the button you will be presented with a confirmation box as shown in Figure 7 below.

Step 7: Press the Restart button and let the computer reboot. It will now boot up into Safe Mode.

Step 8: When the computer boots up do what diagnostic or troubleshooting tasks that you need to do.

Step 9. When are finished with your tasks, complete steps 1-7 again, but in Step 6 this time uncheck the checkbox labeled "/SAFEBOOT". Then click on the General tab and set it for Normal startup.

Step 10: Reboot the computer back into normal mode.

Windows Vista

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

Using the System Configuration Tool Method:

Close any running programs and open Windows so you are back at the desktop.
Click on the Start () button.
In the Start Menu Search Box () type msconfig and press enter on your keyboard.
The System Configuration utility will open and you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on the Boot tab.
You will now be at the Boot options screen as shown below.

Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Safe boot
Press the Apply button and then press the OK button.
You will now be presented with a prompt stating that you need to reboot the computer to apply the change.

Click on the Restart button to reboot your computer.
Your computer will now restart directly into Safe Mode. When you get to the Vista logon screen, log on to the computer and perform any necessary tasks.
When done with your tasks, from within Safe Mode, start msconfig.
When the program is open, and you are on the General tab, select the option labeled Normal Startup.
Then press the Apply button and then the OK button.
When the programs prompts you to reboot, allow it to do so, and you will boot back into Windows Vista in normal mode.

Windows 7

Using the F8 Method:

Restart your computer.
When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen as shown in the image below.

Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode option you want.
Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode.
When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Windows 7 will enter Safe mode.
Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

Using the System Configuration Tool Method:

Close any running programs and open Windows so you are back at the desktop.
Click on the Start () button.
In the Start Menu Search Box type msconfig as shown in Figure 12 below.

The System Configuration utility will open and you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Safe boot
Press the Apply button and then press the OK button.
You will now be presented with a prompt stating that you need to reboot the computer to apply the change.

Click on the Restart button to reboot your computer.
Your computer will now restart directly into Safe Mode. When you get to the Vista logon screen, log on to the computer and perform any necessary tasks.
When done with your tasks, from within Safe Mode, start msconfig.
When the program is open, and you are on the General tab, select the option labeled Normal Startup.
Then press the Apply button and then the OK button.
When the programs prompts you to reboot, allow it to do so, and you will boot back into Windows Vista in normal mode.

Problems that can occur by forcing Safe Mode using the System Configuration Utility

It is possible to make your computer continuously boot up into safe mode using the System Configuration utility as described above. The program does this by changing your boot.ini file, the settings file that configures your computer's boot sequence, and adding the /safeboot argument to your operating systems startup line. An example of this can be seen below.

When you are done using safe mode, you would then run the System Configuration utility again and uncheck the /Safeboot option, thus removing the /safeboot argument from the boot.ini file, and allowing your computer to boot up normally.

On a computer that is operating properly this is normally not a problem. Unfortunately, though, a new trick that some of the more recent malware are using is to delete certain Windows Registry keys so that your computer can not properly boot into safe mode. It is in these situations that using the System Configuration utility to boot into safe mode can cause the computer to become inoperable for many users.

This is because once you set the computer to boot into Safe Mode using /Safeboot, it will continuously attempt to start Safe Mode until the /safeboot argument is removed from the boot.ini. Since the malware is not allowing us to actually boot into safe mode, you have no way of getting to a point where you can run the System Configuration utility again to uncheck the /Safeboot option. Thus, you are stuck with a computer constantly attempting to get into safe mode and not being able to do so.

If a situation like this has happened to you it is possible to fix this problem by renaming your boot.ini file. The first step would be to use a boot disk to start your computer. If your computer does not have a floppy disk, then you can typically boot off the Windows CD that came with your computer in order to access the Windows Recovery Console. Once booted to a command prompt, you would simply rename your C:\Boot.ini file to another name like C:\Boot.ini.bak. The command to rename the file at the command prompt is:

ren C:\Boot.ini Boot.ini.bak

Once the file is renamed, you can then remove the boot disk and reboot your computer to get back to normal mode. When booting up after the rename, do not be surprised if you see an error stating that you do not have a valid Boot.ini file. When you get back to normal Windows mode, you can then rename C:\Boot.ini.bak to C:\Boot.ini and run Msconfig again to remove the /safeboot flag.

A hub forwards data packets to all the ports.A switch is more intelligent. It recognizes which computer is connected to which port based on the MAC address (the network card's hardware address assigned by the manufacturer) and saves this information in a table. When a switch receives a data packet, it determines the recipient and forwards the packet to the correct computer.

A switch forwards data packets only to the recipient. Therefore, a switch creates significantly less data traffic than a hub. The more computers that you have in your network, the more sense it makes to use a switch. Your signal distributor must have enough ports to support the number of computers in your network, and it should have extra ports in case you want to add more computers later.
Connecting the Computers.
To connect the computers, follow these steps:
Install the network card.
Install the signal distributor.
Put it near a power outlet and where all the computers can easily access it. To install the signal distributor, follow these steps:
a. Connect the network cards to the signal distributor. To do so, plug one end of the twisted pair cable into a network card and the other end into the hub or switch.
b. Plug the signal distributor into a power outlet.
Your small network is almost completely set up. You now have to prepare Windows to operate in a network environment.
Configuring TCP/IP Protocol
Now that you have successfully configured your network card, you must make sure that your computers can communicate with each other. To do so, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections. Windows has installed a LAN connection for your small network here.

Note You can also use the Classic view in Control Panel. To switch to Classic view, click Start, click Control Panel, click Switch to Classic View (if available), and then double-click Network Connections.
If you want to establish other connections (for example, to the Internet), it is helpful to give all connections clear names. This makes it easier to differentiate the connections from each other.
Right-click the network interface, click Rename, type a different name, and then press ENTER.

To verify your LAN connection, right-click your connection, and then click Properties. The installed network components appear.

All the following key features are available:
•Client for Microsoft NetworksThis service makes connections to other Windows-based computers.
•File and Printer Sharing (this feature makes network resources available).
•Quality of Service (QoS) Packet Scheduler (this feature optimizes network traffic).
•The TCP/IP protocol.

Adding Network Components

If a component is no longer available, it may have been inadvertently removed. In this case, you can reinstall it.

File and Printer Sharing

This address has four numbers between 0 and 255, separated by periods. All computers are numbered in a series.The subnet mask determines the network where the computer resides. This is especially important in larger networks. Large networks are frequently divided into several subnets. In your small network, all the computers are in the same subnet.
InternetThe Internet is a large TCP/IP network that is based on IP addresses. The addresses must be unique here, too. Two computers cannot use the same IP address. If you want to access the Internet, you must make sure that your small network does not use an address that is already in use. Therefore, there are certain address ranges that you can use in your network without problems. For example, you can use address ranges such as 192.168.0.X, where X is a number between 1 and 254. Use 255.255.255.0 for your subnet mask.To define the IP address and the subnet mask, follow these steps:
1. Right-click your LAN connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
3. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the corresponding number combination. If you use 192.168.0.1 for the first computer, use 192.168.0.2 on the second computer, and 192.168.0.3 for the third computer, and so on. The subnet mask stays the same for all the computers. Use 255.255.255.0 for this, as recommended.
4. Click OK, and then click Close.

Note : If you want to share Internet access, assign the address 192.168.0.1 to the computer that will establish the Internet connection. However, when you configure Internet Connection Sharing, this IP address is assigned to the computer automatically.
Setting the Computer Names and the WorkgroupsYou must assign a name and a workgroup to every computer, regardless of what protocol you use. As with the IP addresses, each computer name must be unique. Therefore, you can use a computer name only one time in your workgroup. To assign a name and a workgroup to the computer, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Click the Computer Name tab, type a description of the computer (optional), and then click OK.

Advantages of SharingWhen you turn on file sharing, you can determine what resources are available in the network. All the computers on the network can use the resources that you enable for sharing. For example, you can enable the following resources for sharing:
• Folders
• Drives
• Printers
• Internet accessResources that are not set up for sharing remain private.There are many advantages to sharing devices and files:
• You can easily copy or move files from one computer to another. You can share work on files on different computers.
• You can access a single device, such as a printer or a ZIP drive, from any computer.
• One Internet access point is sufficient for several computers to use the Internet at the same time.
Sharing FilesWhen a computer allocates resources, it assumes server functions. Any computer in a peer-to-peer network workgroup can do so. You must configure file and printer sharing for a computer to act as a server. You set up this functionality when you installed the network card. Therefore, you can already share a file or files that you want to use on other computers. To share a file, follow these steps:
1. Locate a folder on the computer.
2. Right-click the file that you want to share, and then click Sharing and Security to view additional settings. The next two windows only appear when you are setting up your first shared item. Windows notifies you that sharing data presents a certain security risk. Therefore, remote access is turned off by default. Click the Security warning message, click Just enable file sharing, and then click OK.

Now you can share data. Click Share this folder on the network, and then type a share name. You can use this name later to access the data. The share name and the folder name do not have to be the same.

Specify whether the data that is accessed over the network can be changed, and then click OK.

• ZIP drivesTo stop sharing, right-click the file that is shared, click Sharing and Security, and then clear the Share this folder on the network check box. When you do so, this resource no longer appears under this computer name. However, the folder link directly in the network environment remains. It is no longer available unless you set it up for sharing again. When a user tries to access the folder, they receive a "No access" message.
Your network is now fully functional. If you have already set up an Internet connection, optimize the configuration. Make sure that File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks are turned off in the dial-up connection (only here). and make sure that the Internet connection firewall is turned on. A dial-up connection to the Internet does not use these services, and the firewall provides some protection against malicious users. To optimize the configuration, follow these steps:

Sometimes you don’t realize how much you appreciate a feature until it breaks. One example is Outlook hyperlinks in an email. It’s so convenient to click the link in the email and have the correct web page open. What I dislike is when a hyperlink in Outlook doesn’t work and I get some error or no action. Below, I’ve listed 3 solutions to this link problem.
Why Do Hyperlinks Stop Working in Outlook?
Over the years, I’ve not found what process causes Microsoft Outlook links to break. The last time, the URL links broke after I did a Windows update and installed the Internet Explorer 8 beta. Because I didn’t test Outlook email in between the downloads, I couldn’t tell you which activity contributed to the problem.
I have noticed certain activities may break my Outlook hyperlinks such as:
Installing Windows updates
Installing or uninstalling browsers
Installing browser add-ons
Installing various Outlook plugins or addins
Using aggressive Windows Registry cleaners
Fix 1: Start by Resetting Your Default Browser
Most times, I can fix my Outlook hyperlink problem by resetting my default browser to Internet Explorer. I start with this step even if I plan to use Firefox as my browser. The reason I choose this path is I’ve had better success and it takes me closer to my end goal.
To make IE your default browser,
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools from the menu
3. Select Internet Options.
4. Click the Programs tab
5. Click the button labeled Make Default.
6. Click OK.
7. Test a hyperlink in Outlook to see if the web page opens in Internet Explorer.
Fix 2: Reregister Windows DLL Files
Even after resetting your default browser you still can’t open hyperlink in Outlook, it could be one or more registry keys is damaged. The solution is to reregister some of your DLL files. The process may sound intimidating, but it’s easy. There are 6 files to register based on your system. Some configurations use shdocvw.dll and others use shdoc401.dll.
To reregister the DLL files,
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click the Start button.
3. Select the Run… command. Vista users can type “run” in the Start Search textbox.
4. In the Open: textbox, type regsvr32 followed by a space and the file name.
In the screen snap below, I’ve used the first file Shdocvw.dll.

5. Click the OK button. You should see a message showing the process succeeded.
6. Click OK to dismiss the message.
7. Repeat the procedure for the other DLL files.

Fix 3: Reset the (NONE) URL File Types
If you’ve gotten to this part, I have to figure your Outlook hyperlinks are still broken. Don’t fret as I have another fix to try. My guess is someplace along the line your file associations broke. This is the mapping Windows uses to a file type to program. A common mapping might be .XLS files with Microsoft Excel. In this case, we need to check URL mappings.
To set URL file associations,
1. Open My Computer.
2. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options…
3. Click the File Types tab. A long list of Extensions and File Types appears.
4. Scroll down till you get to (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

8. Click the Browse… button
9. Navigate to where Internet Explorer is located. (For most PC, it’s at C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe)

11. Click OK.
12. Click Close.
13. Repeat the process for (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy.
* If open doesn’t show, click New and type open in the action box.
Back to Firefox (Optional)
Once you get the Outlook links to open in Internet Explorer, you can change your default browser to Firefox. This should roll down to Outlook so any embedded hyperlinks will open in the correct browser.
To set Firefox 3 as your default browser,
1. Open Firefox
2. Select Tools from the menu
3. Select Options…
4. Click Advanced
5. Click the Check Now button
6. Click Yes if the default browser is not set.
7. Click OK.
Note: For Firefox 2.x users, click Main instead of Advanced.

Step 1: Add the AOL e-mail accountTo add an AOL e-mail account in Outlook Express, follow these steps:
1. Sign on to AOL.
2. Start Outlook Express. If Outlook Express is not your default e-mail client, you may be prompted to specify if you want to use Outlook Express as your default e-mail client. To select Outlook Express as your default e-mail client, click OK.
3. If you are prompted to type your name in the Display name box, click Cancel, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: The new Internet account has not been created yet. Are you sure you want to exit the wizard?
4. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
5. Click Add, and then click Mail.
6. In the Display name box, type your name as you want it to appear on your outgoing e-mail messages, and then click Next.
7. In the E-mail address box, type your AOL e-mail alias. For example, type user@aol.com.
8. Click Next.
9. In the My incoming mail server is a list, click IMAP.
10. In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server box, type imap.aol.com.
11. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type smtp.aol.com, and then click Next.
12. In the Account name box, type your AOL account name.
13. In the Password box, type your AOL account password.
14. If you want Outlook Express to save your password, leave the Remember password check box selected.
15. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Step 2: Configure the AOL e-mail accountAfter you add the AOL e-mail account, you must configure this account in Outlook Express. To do this, follow these steps:
1. When you return to the Internet Accounts dialog box after you complete the steps from the "Step 1: Add the AOL e-mail account" section, click the Mail tab.
Note If the Internet Accounts dialog box is not open, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
2. On the Mail tab, click the AOL account that you added, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Servers tab, and then click to select the My server requires authentication check box.
4. Click Apply, and then click the Advanced tab.
5. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box, type 587.
Note By default, the SMTP port number is 25.
6. Click Apply, and then click the IMAP tab.
7. Click to clear the Store special folders on IMAP server check box, click Apply, and then click OK.
8. Click Apply, and then click OK.
9. Click Close. If you receive the following message, click Yes:

1. Disable smooth scrolling in Internet Explorer:
1. In Internet Explorer 4, click Internet Options on the View menu. In Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.

Print spooler service failed to start

Solution

Method 1

Verify that that the Print Spooler service, and all the services that it depends on, are correctly installed and running.

Open the Services Management Console (click Start, Run and enter services.msc).

Double-click the Print Spooler service to open its Properties window.

On the General tab, check that Startup type is Automatic.

Select the Dependencies tab.

Note all of the dependent services listed, then close the Print Spooler Properties window.

Repeat the above steps for the dependent services noted.

If any of the dependent services are missing or cannot be started, try uninstalling all installed printer drivers and then reinstalling them.

If this method cannot be completed or does not resolve the problem, try Method 2.

Method 2

Remove all Print Spooler service dependencies other than the Remote Procedure Call service.

Click Start, Run and enter sc config spooler depend= RPCSS (there must be a space after "=" but not before it.)

Troubleshooting Windows Update

1) Check the windows is genuine or not, if windows is not genuine then customer won’t be able to receive any windows updates.

2) Check the date and time on the customer’s computer and confirm if they are correct.

3) Check the error code or error message which occurs while running windows updates.

4) Check the “Automatic Update” service from services.msc, STATUS should be Started, STARTUP TYPE should be Automatic. If it is stopped, start the service and try running windows updates again.

5) Rename the Software Distribution folder (c:\windows\software distribution) to Software Distribution.old AND Rename Catroot2 folder (c:\windows\system32\catroot2) to Catroot2.old.

6) If you are unable to rename the folders, stop the automatic update service and then try renaming the folders again. Remember to start the service after renaming them. Try running windows updates again.

7) If it fails again, then check the log created by windows updates from start >> run >> windowsupdate.log . The latest log created would be on the bottom of the window. Check for any specific error code (eg. 0x80040002 or anything starting with 0x…) or any error message.

8) Research according to the error code or error message and troubleshoot further.
